You can just watch and listen, if you're feeling shy, or explore various spare instruments to see which ones you like playing best.
Some good things to bring:
Water and earplugs, especially for kids
Snare drums, Agogo bells, Shakers, or other Brazilian instruments
Tape recorders and notebooks for reference
Other good things, better left at home:
Congas, bongos, claves, doumbecks, buffalo spirit drums, prayer
bowls, mridangams, electric guitars, or other instruments generally associated
with other traditions.
